PopShocker Reads: Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult

Salem FallsSalem Falls by Jodi Picoult

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jack St. Bride had taught at a girls' prep school until a student with a crush on him ruined his reputation. Now he works at the Do-Or-Diner in Salem Falls. Even as he falls for the owner, Addie Peabody, four teenage girls form a malicious coven, making shattering allegations. Addie looks into Jack's past for evidence to redeem, or condemn, the man she loves.

Usually I walk away from Jodi Picoult's books feeling like I've just read a really well written story that deals with both the light and dark sides of humanity. Salem Falls did not leave me feeling this way. It's strange because there were moments when the book felt like a page-turner but not consistently. The amount of typos alone in the Kindle Edition detracted from the focus of the story, not to mention overall it just felt like Picoult gave up on this one. I have to wonder if it wasn't the very first novel she ever wrote because it feels like an entirely different writer than her other books. It wasn't a bad story, somehow interweaving sex offenders with witchcraft, but it just didn't seem up to the standard that Picoult usually writes at. If you're a Picoult fan and read everything she has written, go for it, if not, find another Picoult story to fill your time with.
