THIS Is How Most of Us East Coasters Handled the Earthquake...

The West Coast is still laughing at us for our insane response to the earthquake this past week on the East Coast... and rightfully so. But truthfully most of us were fairly calm DURING the whole ordeal. Why? Because we didn't know it was an earthquake! In fact if you ask any of us D.C. or NYC residents about our initial reaction, we'll tell you our immediate thought was another terrorist attack... no joke. We have experience in those... but not in big shaking natural disasters.

The MLB Fantasy 411 team that was filming reacted as most of us did. A few choice words, a few looks of confusion, a few nervous gestures... but we never left our desks! And it wasn't until after it was over that we really started making a big deal out of it with stories of past experiences, shock and excitement.... as you'll see in the video.

Please note this video does contain some strong language and may not be safe for work...

Religiosity: Alex Reads Creation

YouTube favorite Alex is back with his thoughts as he reads the story of creation from The Bible. Alex admits in the very beginning that he believes the Bible to be a work of fiction but even the most religious of the bunch should not be offended by this. Alex goes on to thoroughly entertain you with his interpretation and he somehow manages to do it without being offensive to those who believe. In fact, his thoughts are probably not that far off of the everyday young Christian anyway. However, a word of caution, if you are one of those folks easily offended by any questioning of the Bible, this might not be the video for you:

EARTHQUAKE!!! D.C. Gets Sh-Sh-Shaken!

Those in D.C. today (aka PopShocker and a whole mess of people not used to earthquakes) were treated to a surprise in the form of a 5.9 earthquake today that originated in the Central Virginia area. The shocks of this quake were definitely felt all the way up to NYC and down into North Carolina. Others as far as Boston are also claiming to have felt the quake. While this kind of natural behavior might be "old-hat" for West Coasters, those of us on the East Coast are still buzzing from the craziness. Buildings (The Pentagon, White House, etc.) were evacuated, schools have been closed, crazy behavior has ensued... and yes, while it definitely was a little crazy given that nothing like that happens out here... some of us are making a little too big a deal out of it. Here is our favorite post regarding today's earthquake damage via The Daily What: Appalling Aftermath of the Day

Um... Really? InTouch Claims Will & Jada Smith Separate

source

It's not that separation or divorce isn't possible in Hollywood, if anything it's probable, but everyone has those few celeb marriages they expect to last forever... and Will & Jada Smith are at the top of that list. Sure he's been divorced before but they've been mouthing off to the media about 'family first' and how open their dialogue is at home... not to mention the restrictions put on who works when. So it just seems like this might be more rumor than truth. Time will tell if InTouch is right or wrong on this one...

Stage Collapses at Indiana State Fair: Disturbing Video

By now you've most likely heard all about the Indiana State Fair stage collapse where several people were killed by the unlikely accident. Just before the favorite country duo Sugarland was supposed to take the stage, a 60 mile an hour wind gust took down the stage as the crowd gathered for the upcoming show. After you watch the video please take a moment to remember those who were killed (Tammy Vandam, 42; Glenn Goodrich, 49; Alina Bigjohny, 23; Christina Santiago, 29; Nathan Byrd, 51) and those that were injured as well during this horrific accident.

PLEASE BE WARNED: This footage, while there is no blood or injury seen, is a very clear video of the stage collapsing down onto the ground and due to the reality of the situation it feels disturbing and is difficult to watch!!!

Colin Firth & Orlando Bloom in Main Street

Main Street boasts a pretty fantastic ensemble cast. Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Amber Tamblyn, Patricia Clarkson, Ellen Burstyn head up this story about a small town that is turned on its head when a stranger promising big things rides into town.

Several residents of a small Southern city whose lives are changed by the arrival of a stranger with a controversial plan to save their decaying hometown. In the midst of today's challenging times, each of the colorful citizens of this close-knit North Carolina community, will search for ways to reinvent themselves, their relationships and the very heart of their neighborhood. [IMDB.com]

Check out the trailer below and then see what we had to say:

Aside from the massive crush we have on Colin Firth, Main Street didn't have much more to offer. Based on a story written by the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, the story follows residents of a small U.S. town and the man who turns their world upside down. Utilizing what might be the most see-through American accent yet, Colin Firth plays Gus who is promising big things for the withering southern town and the residents. Mostly forgotten since those pirate movies, Orlando Bloom actually pulls out a decent performance as a small town police officer trying to win the heart of his longtime love (Tamblyn) who has other ideas for herself. The always-amazing Patricia Clarkson and the legendary Ellen Burstyn round out the cast brilliantly as a mother and daughter team forging a relationship with Gus in different ways. But aside from the glitter and glow of the cast, the movie just doesn't deliver. There is promise but overall you are left slightly bored and wondering why there was hardly any ending before the movie just fizzled out. If you still want to check out the film in its entirety, wait for Netflix!

What a Concept: The Toothpaste Tube Gets a Makeover

source
It's pretty darn annoying when you know there is still toothpaste in the tube but without some kind of crazy contraption, it's never coming out. Sure, you can roll the tube up, squeeze from the bottom to the top, stomp on it with your feet... whatever trick you have up your sleeve... but getting that last bit out of the tube is next to impossible! And let's not even go into the fact that most toothpaste tubes are not all that environmentally friendly. The SAVEPASTE toothpaste has a different idea in mind. By using their new design above, SAVEPASTE gives you the ability to squeeze out more of your toothpaste all while using an eco-friendly container. And here's the best part, this brand has the potential to come in at a much lower cost than you might think. So, would you switch to SAVEPASTE?

The Movie Nickelodeon Doesn't Want You to Remember: Cry Baby Lane

In the year 2000, no this is not a Conan sketch, kid's network Nickelodeon aired a movie called Cry Baby Lane that was meant to be a mildly scary movie for kids, capitalizing on the success of kid-scary shows already airing on the network. The movie featured a mostly young unknown cast, although you'll recognize Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) and Jim Gaffigan (My Boys). Unfortunately, after it aired the network received too many complaints from parents, stating the movie was entirely too scary for the audience age of Nickelodeon. Now here's the crazy part... it's been rumored that Nickelodeon has since denounced the film and pretends it doesn't even exist. WHAT?! It's not as if Rob Zombie directed the film. Check out the video and see for yourself a movie so scary that a kid's television network won't admit it even exists...

PopShocker Reads: Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult

Salem FallsSalem Falls by Jodi Picoult

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jack St. Bride had taught at a girls' prep school until a student with a crush on him ruined his reputation. Now he works at the Do-Or-Diner in Salem Falls. Even as he falls for the owner, Addie Peabody, four teenage girls form a malicious coven, making shattering allegations. Addie looks into Jack's past for evidence to redeem, or condemn, the man she loves.

Usually I walk away from Jodi Picoult's books feeling like I've just read a really well written story that deals with both the light and dark sides of humanity. Salem Falls did not leave me feeling this way. It's strange because there were moments when the book felt like a page-turner but not consistently. The amount of typos alone in the Kindle Edition detracted from the focus of the story, not to mention overall it just felt like Picoult gave up on this one. I have to wonder if it wasn't the very first novel she ever wrote because it feels like an entirely different writer than her other books. It wasn't a bad story, somehow interweaving sex offenders with witchcraft, but it just didn't seem up to the standard that Picoult usually writes at. If you're a Picoult fan and read everything she has written, go for it, if not, find another Picoult story to fill your time with.

Have You Heard? Punch Brothers

You may remember a little band that started making waves in the country/blue grass scene years back called Nickel Creek. Unfortunately after mild success the band decided to split, at least for a while, and try out other interests and projects. Chris Thile, often called a mandolin virtuoso, met up with a few other fellas and started the group Punch Brothers (a Mark Twain reference) that focuses on a newer blue grass sound. Punch Brothers consists of Thile (Nickel Creek), Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny (Leftover Salmon), Chris Eldridge and Paul Kowert. Take a listen and head on over to their official page to find out more: PunchBrothers.com

Virginia Tech on Lockdown - Possible Shooter

Virginia Tech is on lock down after news of a possible man with a gun on campus. At this time there is no confirmation of a gunman but the university is on lock down until further notice.

On the university's web site, a message was posted at 9:37 a.m. alerting students that there is a gunman near Dietrick Hall. Dietrick Hall is a three floor, more than 92,000 square foot dining facility on the Blacksburg, Va., campus, according to the university's web site. Students have been told to stay indoors.

NFL and Movie Star Bubba Smith Dies at Age 66

Bubba Smith, former NFL-er and even more well known as Moses Hightower in the comedy movie series, Police Academy, was found dead in his home at the age of 66 yesterday, August 3, 2011. Bubba, born Charles Aaron Smith, began his career in the NFL, starting with the Colts and ending with the Oilers. Due to his unnaturally large size (6'7") he became a favorite character actor on shows like Charlie's Angels, Married with Children, Family Ties and Good Times. But many of us remember him most from his zany character, Hightower, in the Police Academy movies. At this time no cause of death is known.
